As National Ice Cream Day Nears, SPX FLOW Celebrates its Essential Role in Producing Frozen Delights

End-to-end Ice Cream Process Technologies Make Mass Production Simpler for Dairy Manufacturers

Charlotte, N.C., July 13, 2023 - National Ice Cream Day is July 17, a great opportunity to highlight how SPX FLOW supports ice cream manufacturers with the technologies necessary to develop the classic treat. From separation to standardization and heat treatment, our food and beverage solutions separate raw milk into cream and skim, ultimately used in the final version of the creamy summer favorite.

Once raw milk is cooled, SPX FLOW solutions serve as the building blocks of ice cream manufacturing. Across five food and beverage brands, our service and support programs are used in each step of the dairy and plant-based process line:

  • To separate cream from skim milk, Seital separators, APV plate heat exchangers and Waukesha-Cherry Burrell pumps/valves help manage temperature, mechanical treatment and the presence of free air in those crucial first steps.
  • When it comes to standardization, producers are supported with regulating their specific fat percentages using APV membrane filtration and the CompoMaster, before the ice cream mixture undergoes heat treatment for formulation.
  • Food-grade mixers combine fats, SNFs (Solids-Not-Fat), sugars, emulsifiers and stabilizers using technologies like the APV Liquiverter, Flex Mix Instant and ARRS pigging technology for the clean-in-place rinse.
  • Pasteurization eliminates harmful bacteria, whereas homogenization disperses important fats throughout the mixture for a consistent mouthfeel. The first-ever homogenizers, APV Gaulin and Rannie brands, are ideal for this.
